On True and Radical Discipleship
We should be mindful of not becoming exclusive or judgmental in our faith practices. God’s grace can extend beyond the boundaries we might set, and we should be open to acknowledging the goodness and truth found in others.
Jesus highlights that even the smallest act of kindness, such as giving a cup of water, will be rewarded. This underscores the importance of humility in discipleship. We are reminded that every act of service, no matter how small, has value in God’s eyes. Our focus should be on serving others, not seeking recognition or status. In a world that often values power and prestige, Jesus calls us to live lives of humble service. We must see the dignity of every person and the significance of every kind action.
Jesus uses strong language to emphasize the seriousness of sin and the call to radical holiness. He speaks of cutting off a hand or foot or tearing out an eye if they cause one to sin. This imagery, while not to be taken literally, underscores the importance of avoiding sin at all costs. Discipleship requires sacrifice and a willingness to rid ourselves of anything that leads us away from God. This is a call to self-examination. What in our lives causes us to stumble in our faith? Are there habits, attitudes, or relationships that need to be “cut off” because they lead us into sin? True discipleship often involves difficult choices and sacrifices for the sake of holiness.
